CCTV Installation: Where to Place Your Security Cameras

Shuretech • Sep 14, 2023

How secure your business is depends on how much you invest in your security equipment. Whether you choose security cameras, shutters, barriers and access control features. A combination of all of these things will put you in the best place to protect your business. Security cameras are a vital part of your security plan. They are great at deterring theft from both employees and the public as well as reducing time-wasting behaviour and catching suspects in case of burglary. However, it’s essential your cameras are placed in the right location. If you haven’t put your cameras in the right place, they may not catch what you need to, making them futile.

Security camera installation

The good news is that your security camera installation will be conducted by an experienced security team. They will have the know-how to help you put the cameras in the right place. Having done a lot of CCTV camera installation previously, they will be able to ensure that the cameras are recording everything they should be. It’s important that surveillance equipment is installed by professionals as it can be quite complex and can be hard to do right. By investing in a quality CCTV installation company, you can ensure you are getting the best bang for your buck.

Here are some of the best places to put your security cameras to help you maximise their ability.

Exits and entrances

It will come as no surprise that the most important place to put cameras is at exits and entrances. This allows you to keep track of who goes in and out of the building, who is inside and how long they stay. Cameras will get good footage of anyone coming in or out so that you know who to look at should there be any foul play. Cameras are also a good deterrent as people will see the camera at the entrance and rethink their actions before doing anything they shouldn’t. We recommend placing a camera near something that will catch people’s eye such as a TV monitor or a prominent sign. This ensures that they have seen the camera and are aware they are being recorded but it also makes them turn their heads towards the camera to enable you to get a good shot of what they look like.

Points of sale

If you have any cash registers on-site, you should have cameras near them too. This will help to discourage customers from stealing, but also employees. Points of sale are a common place for theft to occur, so it’s important these areas are monitored. When installing CCTV at these spots, ensure that cameras are pointed at the areas where a customer would stand and that it isn't more than seven feet high. Anything higher than this will just give you an aerial view of the top of the customer’s head. This wouldn’t be much help if the customer needs to be identified, so make sure you can get a good view. Install the cameras behind the point of sale pointing directly at where someone will be standing.

Reception

The reception area is a place in the business that receives a lot of traffic. If you have a reception area, make sure that it is covered by security cameras. You can make the cameras subtle so as not to impact the room and how welcoming it is. Modern technology can enable you to use small cameras that are hardly noticeable and blend into your decor. You can hide security cameras in frames, smoke detectors, clocks, sprinklers and many other places. But you will need to be careful not to run into any legal problems when concealing cameras. For example, you are allowed hidden cameras in the workplace to prevent criminal activity, but not to monitor your employees in secret.

Exterior

You should protect your business by installing security cameras around the perimeter of the building. While you may not have assets stored here, it’s where most crime starts and how people will find access if they want to break and enter. External security cameras can help protect your car park and keep track of employees who receive shipments from loading docks. The cameras are there to record any vehicles that shouldn't be there, their number plates and the people driving them. They can also help law enforcement in the recovery of stolen goods and offer a sense of security to employees who are working late into the night. Walking around an empty car park at night can feel a bit scary, so the cameras can help make it feel safer.

Warehouses

If your business has a warehouse, it likely stores a large amount of valuable inventory which makes it a hotspot for theft, whether internal or external. Instead of blindly trusting the people who go in and out of the warehouse, a security camera offers extra eyes and ears when you’re not on-site yourself. You can mount them inside and outside to prevent crime and stop it in its tracks. You should aim to keep your warehouse brightly lit with plenty of lights. This means the camera is actually able to see the culprits and the cameras aren’t there uselessly.

Secluded spots

Dark corners are often places where crimes can be committed. Any areas where it looks like no cameras cover it will attract the wrong kinds of people. You may not consider putting security cameras in these areas, however, it is usually a good idea. One common place that criminals use to put stolen goods or evidence is the bins. An employee may throw away merchandise and go back and retrieve it later on, or ask somebody else to retrieve it for them. If security cameras are present, this will curve this behaviour and make sure that employees follow the rules.

Benefits of security cameras

●     Deterrent against crime: Security cameras can deter criminals from targeting your business. They can also help to identify criminals who commit crimes, making it easier for law enforcement to catch them.

●     Evidence for law enforcement: If a crime does occur, security camera footage can be used as evidence in court. This can help to ensure that criminals are brought to justice.

●     Peace of mind: Security cameras can give you peace of mind knowing your business is being monitored. This can be especially helpful if you have valuable assets or if you work late at night.

●     Improved customer service: Security cameras can help to improve customer service by deterring shoplifting and other forms of customer fraud. They can also help to identify customers who are causing problems so that staff can take appropriate action.

●     Reduced insurance costs: Security cameras can help to reduce insurance costs by making your business a less attractive target for criminals.

●     Increased employee productivity: Security cameras can help to increase employee productivity by deterring workplace theft and vandalism. They can also help to identify employees who are not performing their duties so that managers can take corrective action.
