How to Ensure Your Automatic Gate Works for Your Home

Shuretech • Feb 03, 2022

Automatic gates may seem like the height of luxury, but they’re really quite practical and affordable. Before you install a gate, however, there are a few things you need to consider to ensure that the installation fits seamlessly into your home.

Here’s all you need to know.

Should the Gate Swing or Slide?

A simple question, but it really does affect how you use your gate in the future. There are benefits to both types of gate so it’s really down to what best suits your needs.

Sliding gates tend to offer the highest security, so if this is a concern, you should certainly consider it. For areas where there is plenty of space at the front of the property where the gate is, a sliding gate works well, but it’s not ideal if you have a narrow entrance to the property, with nowhere for the gate to go. A swinging gate requires more space in that it swings into the property, but this is depth, not width. If you have enough space, this type of gate is useful and provides a more elegant movement. However, if there is an upward slope behind the gate, you can’t use a swinging one, as it will get stuck.

Consider the Gate Design

There are infinite designs available for your entrance gate. You can go with a nice solid wood and iron look or something more elegant, like lacy wrought iron. One of the biggest considerations is whether you want a solid gate or one that you can see through the slats or design. If you’re looking for more privacy, a solid gate is obviously the best choice. You will still want to see who is on the other side, so consider installing a small peephole or cameras to allow for previewing of guests. Your gate can be designed to suit the style of your home, so go ahead and get creative. This will be the first impression people have of the property. You should ensure it is exactly what you want, as the gate will last for decades if properly cared for.

Which Power Supply Should It Use?

An automatic gate requires energy from somewhere, so you’ll need to determine where that will come from. Some people simply connect their regular domestic energy to the gate, while others set up a solar power system with a battery to ensure it never goes down. There will be a manual option if there is no power but having an alternative power system ensures your gate will remain automatic.
